How fake-APK scams work

1. You search “rummy game download” or “rummy APK” and land on a lookalike site or Telegram channel.
2. The site pushes a direct APK file (“faster than Play Store!”, “exclusive bonus inside!”).
3. The APK requests SMS, contacts and accessibility permissions — then harvests OTPs, spams your contacts with referral links, or locks features behind “deposits” to mule accounts.
4. Money sent is unrecoverable; the app was never affiliated with any real brand.

Common lures: “mod APK”, “unlimited chips”, “old version without KYC”, celebrity endorsements that never happened, and countdown timers.

Verify-before-install checklist

1. Prefer official stores only. Side-loaded APKs bypass every review and malware scan. If an app is not on the official store, treat that as a warning, not a feature.
2. Check the developer name. On the store listing, verify the publisher — scammers clone names, icons and screenshots; the developer identity is harder to fake.
3. Read permissions. A card game has no business reading your SMS or controlling accessibility services. Refuse, or do not install.
4. Search the name + “scam/fraud/review”. Victims post warnings; five minutes of reading saves real money.
5. Never deposit to “unlock”. Activation fees, unlocking fees and “verification deposits” to personal UPI IDs are always fraud.
